There are kits that can be purchased and it is a good idea to go to your local hardware store to discuss your options with a professional because there are so many different coatings to choose from.   This is something you can do yourself or hire a professional to do it for you if your budget allows it and/or you do not have the time.

A garage floor coating will make a real difference in your garage area and it is worth the time, expense and effort involved.

But it didn’t take long for kitchen designers and homeowners to realize that a distinctive backsplash can also help a kitchen look great. That means you can add real flair to your kitchen with relatively little fuss, because installing a backsplash is a project you can tackle without disturbing other elements in the room.

There are no real rules governing backsplashes. Besides selecting a material (or materials), you have to decide how “long” the run should be. Wrapping the backsplash around the entire room gives a sense of visual continuity, which could help a small space seem larger. The opposite approach—panels behind specific areas like the range or sink —highlights and draws attention to these areas.

The other choice is how tall the treatment should stand. A backsplash that runs all the way up to the bottom of the wall cabinets gives the room a finished quality. As for a low backsplash, Karen Thompson, a design consultant for a branch of The Home Depot in Atlanta, says, “I don’t recommend the standard 4-in. backsplash because it adds another horizontal line to a room that’s full of them. Because a backsplash bridges the counter and cabinets, choose a material and color that work with those elements. Complementary colors or variations on a dominant color give a traditional look. I came across a blog post yesterday titled ‘Labeling The Salt‘ written by Lelah at Helping You Organize. Initially I thought that it was going a bit over the top until I remembered I’d actually labelled my own salt on Saturday LOL.

I had been tidying out my baking shelf. I have 4 old ice-cream tubs that hold my flour, milk powder and sugar (staple ingredients for my daily loaf of homemade bread). Anyway I always know which one is which as I put them back in the right order but when my husband takes his weekly trip into the cabinet when he cooks on a Sunday it all goes to pot, so I thought I’d label them.

So back to Lelah’s story – it was about organizing with your husband and it made me think. I’ve lost count of the number of times either my son or my husband just asks me where something is that is ‘hidden in plain sight‘ (love that phrase!). And I expect I’m not alone.

It’s so frustrating, even more so when they try not to be helpless and start pulling everything out of the cabinet in the vain hope of finding what they were looking for. As soon as I see this happening I jump up, dash to the cabinet and swoop in like a super-hero trying to save the cabinet from chaos! I’m usually too late.

Anyway it got me thinking that aiming for an organized home with “a place for everything and everything in its place” is all very well unless I’m the only who knows where these magical places are.

Labelling things that hubby or my son might want is probably a good idea. It might help them put these things back in the right place too. “I don’t know where it goes” is a good excuse but doesn’t help the family buy in I really need to achieve my dream of an organized home.

Obviously there’s no point (in my house anyway) in labelling the baking powder or the desiccated coconut but things like spices spring to mind for hubby and the cookie tin for my son. (Check out my other article for more ideas on making your kitchen family friendly especially with kids in mind.)

You can also take labelling further afield in your house to the bathroom, laundry, linen closet, toy room etc. How about all those wires behind the TV or computer? When quarters are tight, layout is critical. Consider this hardworking kitchen, configured by designer Heidi Piron for serious cooks Liza and Peter Tulloch. Owners of a 70-year-old Colonial Revival in Summit, New Jersey, they had two kids, one dog, and lots of ideas when they asked Piron to improve the workings of their 110-square-foot kitchen. She did so without changing its footprint, and left the sink under the window so Liza could keep an eye on the kids.

She also converted an out-of-the-way broom closet into a message center that doubles as a storage-packed serving area. To make the room seem larger, she suggested glass subway tile and other light-reflecting finishes, like pale granite and red-oak flooring. The cabinets fit together precisely, with a pullout for spices and oils, squeezed in near the range, “in a frameless cabinet, which offers a bit more space inside than one with an inset door,” Piron notes. Says Liza, “As the space was quite limited, every inch was thoughtfully maximized.”

If you plan on keeping more than a handful of bottles of wine you’ll quickly realize you need to have a place to store them.  This may be anything from a simple modern wine rack or a more traditional wine cellar if you are really serious about your collection.  Either way it is important to know a few basics of wine storage before beginning.

Wine needs to be stored horizontally, never vertically.  You will notice if you shop for any kind of wine racks that they are all designed to hold the wine at a vertical slant, this is because the cork needs to stay submerged in wine so that it doesn’t dry out and begin to crack.  A cracked cork can ruin what was once an excellent bottle of wine.If you decide you want a complete wine cellar, you need to keep the humidity approximately 70%; this will improve longevity of the wine as well as proper cork moistness.Red wine storage temperature should be about fifty to sixty degrees, and as constant as is possible.  One of the worst things you can do to a good wine is keep it somewhere there are going to be sharp adjustments in temperature, this will ruin the aging process, causing wines to lose complexity and depth while adding sharp edges to the mouth feel when you finally open it up.Wine likes darkness, thus the tinted bottles – still, sometimes the tint isn’t enough and keeping your wines where light can seep in is generally a bad idea.  If you’re storing in a wine cellar, chances are they aren’t getting too much light but if there are east/west windows you should cover them so the wine isn’t overexposed to sunlight.  If you prefer red wine storage cabinets this is still something to consider, same with wine racks or any other method you may choose.  As long as the collection is protected from direct sunlight it shouldn’t be a problem.

Wine storage is not a complex art, nor does it have to be expensive.  With just a few educated precautions it really isn’t difficult to keep your collection in good shape, whether it is just a few select bottles or a massive collection or rare vintages.

To make one like those shown above you will need:

1.5 yards of gingham fabric – $6
Three 18 inch lengths of grosgrain ribbon = $2
12 hook and loop dot sets – $1
A roll of polyfil quilt batting – $4

Optional decorations:mini plush figures, wooden shapes, ribbons – whatever takes your fancy and fits your budget.

Cut the fabric into 3 pieces

Divide the piece of fabric into 3 equal parts measuring half a yard each. Set one aside. The other two pieces will become the main body of the crib organizer. Measure and trim the pieces so that the final measurements are about 34 inches by 20 inches.

Cut the batting

Once you have the 2 pieces cut to size lay the batting over the fabric and cut the batting so that it will fit between the layers of fabric. The batting should measure about 33 inches by 19 inches minimum.

Prepare the fabric for the batting

To finish the edges and secure the batting in place first you will need to fold the edges over 2 inches on all four sides. Next run a hot iron over the folded edges to set the seams. Once that is done place the batting between the layers positioned so the folded edge from the front piece of fabric wraps around the edges of the batting and the back piece folded edges are facing the batting and lying flat. Pin the sides in place to prevent the fabric and batting from shifting when run through the sewing machine.

Position the ribbon

Before sewing the edge seams measure and cut 3 lengths of grosgrain ribbon to 18 inches. Fold each length of ribbon in half and then place the ribbons with about an inch of the folded edge between the batting and fabric layers. Place the ribbons so that they are evenly spaced across the top of the organizer as they will become the ties that will secure the organizer to the crib rail.

Sew the outer seam

Now you are ready to sew a 1 inch seam around all four sides, paying close attention to the top edge to ensure the ribbons are secure and that the batting is completely enclosed as this will keep the batting in place and create the quilted look that makes this organizer so appealing.

Cut the fabric to make the pockets

To make the pockets you will need to fold the remaining half yard of fabric in half, iron the fold and then cut on the folded line so that you now have two pieces of fabric. Now fold each piece in half and trim so that each piece measures about 18 inches tall by 22 inches wide. You should have two pieces that are this size that will become the front pockets for the organizer.

Cut the batting for the pockets

Now cut a length of batting that will fit sandwiched between the fabric layers and then finish the edges like you did for the main body of the organizer by folding over the edge and then ironing in place.

Sew the seam on the pocket fabric

Next sew a ½ inch seam all the way around each piece of fabric. You should now have two strips of fabric with batting secured inside.

Create the pockets

Now measure 2.5 inches from the right side and make a 1/4 inch pleat and secure with a straight pin. Measure across 2.5 inches from the pleat and mark a vertical seam. You have now outlined the outside pocket. Repeat the pocket making process by measuring 3 inches from the vertical seam, make the pleat and then mark the vertical seam 3 inches from the center pleat. To complete the pocket measurements continue across 2.5 inches, create the center pleat and secure.

Attach the first pocket strip

Pin this pocket strip to the front of the organizer so that the bottom edge of both pieces and the outside edge of the pocket piece line up with the edge of the body of the organizer. To attach the pocket piece to the main body simply sew a straight ¼ inch seam down one outside edge across the bottom and up the other outside edge. To create the individual pockets just sew a straight seam down each of the vertical seam marks.

Attach the second pocket strip

Repeat the pocket process for the second row of pockets. The only difference for this row is that the bottom edge should be placed about 4 inches above the top edge of the lower pocket row. Once the final pocket row has been completed remove all the pleat pins and your crib pocket organizer is nearly ready for use.

Attach your decorations

To make it even more special use peel and stick velcro hook and loop dots to attach decorations to the front of each pocket. Be adventurous!

Fit onto your crib & start using

Your pocket crib organizer is now ready to be put to use. Fasten it securely on the end or side of your crib and fill the pockets with whatever will be most useful to you. Diapers, cloths, clothes, toys, rattles??? What will you use it for? Please let me know.

Do you like to have a plan to get organized for the holidays? If so there are plenty out there. One I’ve been checking out today is called the Christmas Countdown and is a 6 week program that started on 23 October. It promises to transform your pre-holiday household from “chaos to calm”.

I love the goal of “A serene, simple and joyous holiday season for ourselves, our family and our community” but wonder whether the number of assignments and daily checklists would give me a sinking feeling that would take the edge of the Christmas anticipation.

I wonder whether a better option for simplifying your holiday organization is to do less of it. I don’t mean be less organized, I mean put less pressure on yourself. So send fewer Christmas cards, spend less by buying fewer gifts, bake half the cookies you did last year, use fewer decorations and that sort of thing.

If you fancy giving the whole micro-organized Christmas a go, you can’t go wrong with the Christmas Countdown. You couldn’t want for more printable calendars, planner pages, binder covers, worksheets, lists, forms and more.

The 6 week program splits down into 6 sections which really do provide the overview that everyone planning even the simplest of Christmases needs to consider:

This is a planning phase which results in an outline sketch of the upcoming holiday season and a Christmas planning binder or notebook. You start a gift and Christmas card list and perform a home spruce-up exercise! Just reading that got me stressed!

No-one ever likes these do they? Come up with a budget for all your holiday spending. Set up a holiday housework plan – yuk. Split your Christmas card and gift lists into 5 and do one per week – now that sounds like a good plan. Start early and spread the load.

Whilst this maybe the “biggest holiday organization challenge” I’m not sure there’s an easy answer to the problem. Yes lists help ensure you buy everything and hopefully keep you on budget, but they don’t help you decide what to put on the lists in the first place. This is always my biggest problem.

Surely it’s in a lot of people’s interests to dispense with adult gift giving. In this financial climate why waste money buying something that people don’t really want or need. Try your hand at some craft or baked items instead – especially if you can get your kids involved. I’m sure grandparents would prefer something handmade rather than another pair of slippers.

Anyway keep up with your card writing and gift buying this week and start making any gifts you’ve decided will be handmade.

I love menu planning so love this week’s theme. Get flicking through those recipes you’ve got organized neatly (if yours aren’t neat, click here for some help) and decide what you will serve for family and friend get-togethers as well as for the main holiday dates. Check out what you’ve got in your pantry, spice rack and freezer and replace anything that is out of date or missing. Taking an inventory before shopping is a good habit to get into to save $000′s. Do a mini-freezer cooking session if you plan on baking a lot but don’t forget if baking isn’t fun for you, just say no.

Putting up the decorations really makes it feel like Christmas. I love it although we only ever bother with a tree, and an artificial one at that. One year I’ve promised myself we’ll do one of those crazy over the top outdoor things but not just yet. Anyway if you’re hugely into decorations there’s a room-by-room holiday decor planner for you to complete this week where you can have a different theme for each room. Does anyone actually do that? You also get to inspect and inventory your decorations prior to putting them up. I normally combine the two as I don’t have many but I’m getting the impression from this program that our Christmas is a somewhat quiet affair compared to most. We love it though.

You should now be finishing your Christmas cards and gift shopping and/or making. It is also time to clear out the toy clutter to get ready for the imminent influx. This is a great idea and can encompass anything from storing several bins of toys in the garage or basement which then get rotated back into the toy room at a later date to donating good condition toys to many of the worthwhile causes out there. Here are some great ideas of what to do with your unwanted toys. You should also be keeping track of your parties, other events and get-togethers and finalizing food shopping and decorating.

I have only covered a fraction of the tasks detailed in the countdown but apparently you should be able to get through them all by spending 15 minutes per day.

I love the idea of breaking down the task of organizing for the holidays into manageable chunks. But for me the sheer quantity of tasks and checklists would detract from the fun of the build up to Christmas.

Bike storage can be very tricky considering how bulky and mobile they are. Although some find it completely ok to lean their bike against the wall. This is not ideal if you would like to protect your bicycle from damage or injury to others that may accidentally trip over it. There are some ideas for storing bikes in the garage that will prevent this.

Bike Racks

When it comes to multiple bicycle storage, a bike rack is the most ideal choice. It elevates the bike so there is no danger of it rolling away or falling over.

The racks can carry multiple bikes depending on the design. The only problem with this is, although it does keep the bike stationary, there is still that chance of bumping or scratching the metal.  If you opt for a rack make sure the base is sturdy.

Overhead Garage Storage

Bikes mounted on the wall minimize the possibility of damage to the bike.  At the same time, it frees up floor space, allowing you to store more items in your garage.  Keep in mind the type of overhead storage you choose. It should be fastened tightly on the wall so that it can easily carry the weight of the bike.

Ceiling Mount

As the name suggests, this type of bike storage mounts it on the ceiling. The bike is often “hoisted” up by fastening the lines on specific areas and lifting it up using a pulley. Like the overhead method, this not only clears up the area but absolutely removes the possibility of the bike being scratched or dented.

This method is only ideal for ceilings high enough to allow sufficient space to separate the top of the car with the wheels of the bike.

Be particular not only with the type of bike mount but also its quality.  A weak wall or ceiling mount could result in the bike falling, resulting in damage to bicycle and/or injury to someone nearby.

Plan carefully where you will be installing the mounts. The best situation would be to place the bikes in a specific corner of the garage away from other equipment, tools, etc. which removes the chance of accidentally bumping the bike when searching for other items.  The path between the bike storage and the garage door should ideally be clear so that you will be able to simply remove it from the bike storage rack and roll it outside.

With Christmas just over 6 weeks away, are you stressing about having even more toys to store and organize? I am! Thankfully we had a big clear out this year when we turned the toy room into a martial arts room.

I had hoped to gather all the toys into their respective sets from the toy graveyard that I was presented with, but after 5 minutes of trying where I managed to sort 1 square inch, I gave up and shovelled the thousands of pieces into the trash bag.

I picked out the toys that were still in one piece and sorted them into ‘still played with’ and ‘to donate’ piles. The trouble is the ‘keep’ boxes have just been moved to my son’s bedroom rather than actually organized in there. They have been playing on my mind every since and with Christmas fast approaching I know I need to get round to that task.

Reading about toy clutter, gave me another nudge in the right direction and reminded me to come up with a system that:

“encourages your kids to succeed at keeping their room organized so they can find what they want to play with.”

If your kids have too many toys, you need to thin them out. Declutter by putting some toys into a rotation system, give them away to charity or throw them away if they’re sub-par. Involving your kids in this process is a double-edged sword. It can be a good lesson in charitable giving to those less fortunate but more often than not “they are going to get re-attached to everything they see.” As such you should declutter when the kids are at school or after a birthday or holiday when they are into their new stuff.

My 2 cents: I did a mammoth declutter when we cleared out the toy room but that was a few months ago and as my son has hardly moved the stacked boxes on his bedroom floor, he’s obviously not missing anything too much so there should be more to get rid of. I don’t think I’ll be waiting until after Christmas though as I want some storage space ready and waiting for the new influx.

Another way to help avoid toy clutter comes from Carfree With Kids. Angela suggests limiting the number of toys that get bought. Consider activity gifts, like bowling, or outdoor toys instead of more indoor toys if you’re already sinking under them. Also avoid junk toys that you know will be a 5 minute wonder. A “who cares, they’re cheap” attitude is just exacerbating our disposable goods culture and does not teach kids to take care of things. Buy them good quality toys and ensure they look after them.

Whereas in our own organizing we like to split down our groups of items into quite small categories (say, hair care, nail care, makeup etc in the bathroom), for kids rooms it is best to keep to fewer categories (say, Duplos, tea sets, dress up outfits rather than sorting everything by color or type within your broad categories).

Store toys in labelled containers that do not have lids. This makes the whole process as easy as possible for your little ones and their friends who come over for play-dates. They have: “short attention spans and reckless disregard for how much those toys cost in the first place!” So make it easy.

My 2 cents: I hate open toy boxes – the dust, the dust – aaagh. I appreciate that the toys are more accessible when stored in boxes without lids and it also makes for an easier clean up but I can’t stand the grub that collects at the bottom after a few months and the dust that covers the less frequently played with toys. My toy boxes will definitely have lids. I loved the idea of labelling the boxes in 2 languages though. This would have been great 5 years ago when we moved to Spain. Luckily now Ben is completely bi-lingual. Maybe I should label stuff in French and German though …

Pick a time of day when toys will be cleared away – before dinner, after dinner, something like that. Make sure this happens every day just like eating or bathing. Praise them for a tidy bedroom but make sure that tidying is seen as a ‘regular’ event rather than a big deal that deserves a reward.

You should also try to make a routine out of decluttering. Whilst this won’t be a daily event, it should happen more than once a year!

My 2 cents: Fitting organizing into the hectic rollercoaster of daily life is my number 1 goal so I love this part. We actually tidy away before dinner as we have one family room where we do everything – cook, work, eat and relax – but we need to work on taking toys and books back upstairs at that time too. If you are new to this type of routine, be vigilant for the first few weeks, so your kids get into the habit of it. No excuses now!

I got the kick up the butt I needed last night to organize under the kitchen sink. The plumbing leaked. It was about 11pm and we were just getting ready to go to bed when I noticed a small lake covering the kitchen floor. Aaagh.

A quick glance in the cupboard confirmed the bottom trap of the plumbing had come away from the rest of the pipe work and the cabinet was dripping wet.

So I set about emptying the contents onto the countertop whilst hubby got the mop out. Well it was quite an eye-opener.

I found mosquito nets I knew I had but had had to buy new over the summer. I had enough cleaning fluids to last 6 months. Hubby spotted the oven cleaner and set to work spraying the foam over some stubborn grime on a baking sheet – at 11pm – why??!! He left this in the hallway but after we’d gone to bed had to come down and move it outside as the fumes were a bit too close to home.

Anyway I was actually quite glad this happened as organizing under the sink was on my list of kitchen organization tasks – the leak just pushed it to the top of the list.

If you are in a similar situation with no room left under the sink to store anything and with 5 things falling out every time you try to find your kitchen cleaner, give your plumbing a nudge and you’ll have no choice!!

So here’s what I’ve been doing whilst waiting for the plumbing glue to dry.

I cleaned the cabinet!

The kitchen paper was just there to check we had no more leaks!

I tossed or relocated the following:

anything I don’t use (eg, dishwasher rinsing agent). Be brutal!anything that looked too old to be any use (eg, Vimto cordial I’d forgotten about).anything that doesn’t belong in the kitchen (eg, sun cream). Move it to the right place.anything that doesn’t belong under the sink(eg, bottles of olive oil & vinegar). Again move it to the right place.

I’m lucky as my sink is in the corner so my cabinet is quite big but if yours isn’t you could also consider moving items you use infrequently to the pantry, basement or garage.

I then grouped the remaining items into sensible collections for me and how I use them. For example, dishwasher stuff, floor cleaners, kitchen cleaners etc.

I also moved the duplicates to my surplus storage area. (NB: if you don’t already have one I’d highly recommend setting one up. This way you can take advantage of savings to be made when buying in bulk without stretching your kitchen storage beyond its limit.)

Now is a good time, to collect together items that you use together but move from room to room when you are cleaning, such as the duster and polish, window cleaner etc. Treat yourself to a storage bin with a carry handle so you can just pick up the whole collection quickly and easily when needed.

The next problem was what to use to organize the cabinet under the sink. It is probably the most difficult space to get in order for a number of reasons:

the plumbing – this is the biggest headache as it can be quite bulky especially in a small cabinet;the mish mash of items – your collection of cleaning products and supplies can be quite eclectic so organizing items that are a mixture of shapes and sizes is a conundrum;suitable organizers– generic organizers may not fit within the confines of what you’ve got going on under your sink. There are purpose built under sink organizers but if you don’t want to spend the money on those, you’ll need to measure carefully and be creative.

Not having time to buy any special organizers and not really wanting to spend the money anyway, I grabbed some cardboard boxes and started allocating my grouped items – one group to each box. I corralled smaller items into smaller boxes.

I would have preferred to use plastic baskets but I didn’t have any to hand so will swap them over when I’ve been shopping. (I plan on buying a stock of more than I need so I’ve always got some on hand for organizing emergencies!) You can get them cheaply at dollar stores and being plastic they are easy to rinse out if cleaning fluids leak.

I then wanted to perform a bit of rationalization. I knew there were other cleaning products taking up valuable kitchen drawer space that would make more sense to store under the sink. As this area was no longer going to be my kitchen’s Bermuda Triangle, I was happy to free up some drawer space for other things.

Next it was time to think about how to best utilize all the available space. Like I said my cabinet is quite big so I didn’t need to be creative with the space when I saw the small collection of stuff I had left after decluttering.

As you can see below I’ve managed to fit everything back in easily with space to spare. But if your cabinet is short on space, consider the following:

create a shelf to double the storage area. You can buy readymade helper shelves or just create your own with a plank of wood, a baking sheet, a tray or whatever you have to hand.stick command hooks to the walls inside your cabinet. Use them to hang things like rubber gloves from binder clips (I saw this great tip at Organize With Sandy), cloths etc. use the space on the back of the doorto hang hooks or wire racks. To save drilling into your cabinet doors, you could consider using command hooks to hang a light rack from or there are also many ‘over the door’ organizers that just hang in place. The back of the door is ideal for your most frequently used items, as they would be handy to grab, or perhaps small items such as cleaners or scourers. Just make sure you can still close the door before you get carried away.

Get ready to re-fill the cabinet. If you are a fan of shelf liners (I’m not), get them on in there. A rubber mat might be a better idea under the sink to provide extra protection against spills or future plumbing leaks.

At last, it was time to clear my counter and replace my items. I put the least used at the back and the most used at the front.

Then I stood and admired my newly organized under sink cabinet. Wow! Look at all that free space. There actually looks more in real life than on that photo.
